Korda wins the 2023 Siemens Engineering Innovation Award
Korda is proud to have received the 2023 Siemens Engineering Innovation Award for our creative fire alarm solution for the Historic Crew Stadium Dome project. This award recognizes design and problem solving for unique fire and life safety systems.
Each fall, the dome is installed over the training field, creating a dynamic first-in-class major league soccer training field through the winter months. The dome is then deconstructed every spring, which requires the use of modular systems for deployment and deconstruction. When installed, the dome is approximately 100,000 square feet with a 79-foot peak height .
The modularization strategies used to design the dome included custom cable sleeve within the dome material and pluggable cable harnesses at field devices for rapid commissioning and decommissioning. The fire alarm system is designed to accommodate various heating and HVAC shut-off without compromising the air pressure and integrity of the dome during alarm. Korda’s unique design strategies were designed to overcome moisture and weather challenges that are unique to this structure. In addition, the flammable fabric building requires initiation and annunciation devices, including flame detection inside the dome. Since the devices could not be attached to the fabric, and there were limited hard, vertical services, the devices were suspended on cables attached to loops at the top of the fabric dome nearly 60 feet above the playing surface.
Korda’s engineers are proud of their involvement in designing a successful, innovative solution for the Columbus Crew.
