Reynolds Memorial Hospital, West Virginia University, 5th Floor Psychiatric Unit
One of the existing patient floors of this hospital was renovated in order to provide 20 new psychiatric inpatient rooms, which include 4 double rooms and an ADA room.
Korda’s team paid particular attention to the design of equipment, and how these components were secured in the space to protect the patients from components that could be used to harm themselves. For instance, the light fixtures were recessed in the ceiling, and they were designed to fit tightly in the ceiling while minimizing gaps to prevent ligature points. Shower trim components, faucets, and water closets were ligature-resistant, and our engineering team selected devices that were also resistant to damage in order to prevent parts being removed and fashioned into destructive tools.
Additionally, the aging infrastructure of this facility required the replacement of the air handling units serving the space and the improvement of the electrical distribution and emergency power system. Consequently, Korda carefully integrated the new design of these systems into the existing facility and coordinated the work with the construction phasing.
