A Streetscape Transformation in Columbus’ Densest District

A Streetscape Transformation in Columbus’ Densest District

At the 2018 OTEC Conference, Daniel Biru, PE, LEED AP BD+C presented, along with City of Columbus representatives Daniel Wayton and Kyle Schmitmeyer, an update on the City’s Short North District Improvement Project.

Transforming the streetscape of a densely populated urban district bustling with residents and visitors nearly all hours of the day can present a challenge.  But just as with infrastructure in urban neighborhoods across America, the stretch of High Street north of downtown Columbus is in need of rehabilitation.  Simultaneously, this thriving corridor is located in a region expected to gain one million new residents by 2050.  Through responsible planning and design, thorough stakeholder engagement, extensive community communication and a firm commitment to getting the job completed expeditiously, the High Street Improvements project – located just outside of the Greater Columbus Convention Center – shows first-hand that intense construction can be managed while maintaining business and pedestrian access and keeping the public engaged.
